A couple of days ago I took Veronica to swimming lessons. This was the first time I've stepped into an indoor pool area that isn't solely intended to entertain guests at a hotel in around 10 1/2 years and the slap in the face and burning sensation of chlorine in the air made me immediately reminse the memories of my swimming days. As I was standing there thinking about the echos in the pool area and the muffled sounds of being under water hearing the screams of my team mates and mentally looking through the wet lenses of my goggles, I was gently reminded by Veronica's teacher that I could watch the lessons from the viewing deck (as she pointed to the windows over looking the pool area). As I watched lessons that day and over the next day I thought more about those memories and how much I enjoyed the water. So yesterday I found the lap swimming schedule, and purchased my new swimming cap and my new goggles. After I got my family put to bed I silently tried on the very last practice swim suit I bought just before the end of swimming season those 10 1/2 years ago and did a happy dance when it STILL FIT!!!! I was giddy, in my mind, this swim suit still fitting meant that I hadn't lost anything over the last decade, I was going to rock the pool! I immediately started planning my workout and how long I was going to swim for.... (warm-up for about 10 minutes, hard swim for about 35, cool down for about 10 more minutes). When my husband came home from work last night, I told him I was leaving the house to be at the pool at 5:00 am and would be home before he had to leave for work!
I snuck out of the house at 5:15 this morning still having the same giddy feeling I did last night. Nothing could burst my bubble! After getting to the Y, finding my way to the women's locker room, getting all of my swimming gear on and getting into the pool it was 5:30, not quite as early as I planned, but still better than nothing right?! I dipped my toes in the pool to find that it was a comfortable temperature, not near as cold as our morning practices at Falls High School were, and I jumped right in. Four strokes into my first lap my lungs felt like they were collapsing and I'm sure the lifeguard was sitting in her chair laughing her ass off at this girl that walked in like she owned the place, swimming cap, goggles and a racing swim suit as she was sputtering and gasping for air before she had even made it half way across the pool! That was the end of my free-style for the day. I proceeded to fill my next 15 minutes with the breast stroke and back stroke so I didn't have to put my face under the water again this morning. I went a whopping 150 yards this morning, at least, I hope I swam at least that much and didn't just imagine it. By the time I drug myself out of the pool my legs felt like jello, my chest hurt and I was mortified! POP --- bubble burst! Apparently the last 10 years have not been as good to me as I had hoped or they had been too good and I never thought I needed to do any physical activity, but regardless, I sure am glad I was at the pool at 5:00 am when there were 5 people there to witness me make a fool of myself instead of the 7:00 pm open swimming time when there are more people watching through the viewing deck that I would care to witness me make a fool of myself! I'm going back tomorrow, of course, I'm a glutton for punishment, but those memories and that smell, seems to be pulling me back.
My crazy, chaotic, wonderful life!

Our craft filled weekend!
Mike had to travel this weekend for work and JoAnn's had a crazy good sale, so what's a mom and her incredibly creative kids to do?! Have a craft weekend!!!
Our shopping list for the weekend:
We are so excited to get our garden started the kids wanted to make bird houses to brighten it up a bit until we can get the flowers out there and nature can add some color of its own! Aren't they wonderful! Veronica plans to put in a little dirt and some seeds behind her picket fence, we'll keep you posted on how well that works :)!
I saw the cutest idea on a blog the other day and had to try it for myself! JoAnns had scrapbook paper on sale for 5/$1 so if it didn't work, I didn't loose a whole lot! I went scavenging through my unpacked boxes of picture frames and got to work! Here is my end result! I also made one out of Christmas paper that I have tucked behind the one I will use during the rest of the year!
The kids and I have been thrifty, crafty fools this winter! Since we are on the crafting topic, here's one we did a few weeks ago when we decided to re-vamp our 'company' bathroom! For under $50 (for everything) here's what we did! My thriftiest girlfriend found me this great chair for $3 while thrift saling! A little putty, a little sanding, a white towel to re-fabric the seat cushion and some cabinet/trim paint and I love our end result! The kids took some canvas pictures that were in the garage sale box and re-made them into a fabulous creation using the paint we used for the chair, some medicine cups, white paint and glitter glue! We took some old candle jars and filled them with food coloring in bubble bath, some bath salts, a candle and some blue fruit loops (we're still teaching the little guy to aim)! We filled a basket we already had with travel soaps, shampoos, lotions, etc. and put it on the rail under the chair, now the only thing I have left to find is a great deal on a galvanized beverage bucket to put on the chair to put towels in so company doesn't have to go under the sink in search of a bath towel! It was so fun to do!!!
Our shopping list for the weekend:
- Scrapbook paper
- Unfinished birdhouses
- New acrylic paint colors
- Fabric
- Ribbon
- Yarn
- Rummage through boxes of old picture frames that haven't been used in years

The things my kids say & do
Max
Shortly after our return from Disney World my son demanded he be a puppy, this went farther than the walking around the house saying "Ruff, Ruff." I'll give him credit, he was dedicated to the cause. We would walk in the door after school each day and within seconds he would be down to his underwear, wondering why? "Because puppies don't wear clothes, Mom. That would be silly." Convincing the child to put clothes on for school or any outings was painful and difficult. He was sure he could and would be a puppy anywhere he went. He would crawl around the house on all fours. When getting off of the furniture he repeatedly did nose dives into the carpet from going head first, why... "Because puppies go front feet first, Mom."
I went along with this for a couple of days, even calling him my little puppy, thinking it couldn't last very long. 1 month later, I still get told "No, Mom, you are supposed to say 'Good Night, Puppy.'" Apparently my encouragement of their imaginations went a little far this time around. Out of the blue last night, he left his clothes on and when it was time for bed, you won't believe what he did.... HE PUT PAJAMAS ON! And when he woke up this morning, they were still on his little body!

My daughter is without a doubt a smart little girl, has a mind of her own most days and usually doesn't 'follow the crowd' and usually follows the rules that we've set out in our home. An example, she (and Max) received a couple of Valentines at their school parties that were of characters I don't allow in my house (namely Brats & Sponge Bob*). When they went through their loot, she discovered these and said, "Mom, maybe I should throw these away, we aren't allowed to have them." I explained to her it was a card from friends and they can put them in their memory boxes, but yes she was right, I wasn't going to buy or let them buy Brats or Sponge Bob.
Fast forward to yesterday morning, time and time again, I have told the kids at the bus stop it's really not a good idea to play on the huge snow bank that is between the sidewalk and the [very busy] street at the bus stop and if they wanted to play in the snow, they should play on the other side of the sidewalk, where it is safe. Of the 9 kids that still take the bus in the morning, (I take responsibility for 4 of them), 3 listened to me and my logic and I've never seen them play on the gigantic snow bank at the stop sign again. Can you guess who the 4th one is?... That's right, my usually smart, follows the rules daughter (who was in the car just 2 weeks ago when the deer came out of no where and we couldn't stop or swerve fast enough before we hit it-yes, I used this example). I pulled up to the bus stop yesterday morning to say goodbye to her and *Gasp!* guess who was on the snow bank!? I called her over to talk to me and asked her what her punishment should be for not listening or following the rules. Her reply, "Maybe you should take away my high heels for 2 weeks." Ummmm... really, take away something that I told her she couldn't wear in the house anymore anyways (because she's clumsy and has tripped and almost flown down the stairs in those stupid high heels). So, I told her that just wasn't a good enough punishment. I got my girlfriends on board and she went to time-out after school in front of her friends. This was going to work, I know it!
This morning, while she's eating breakfast, I asked her if the embarrassment of being put in time-out in front of her friends at someone else's house was enough to make her follow the rules... her response "No, not really." I don't understand how she will follow the rules to something so trivial as Brats or Sponge Bob, but be so desperate to follow the crowd when it comes to something as dangerous as basically playing in traffic. Since I can't trust her to be smart about the dangers of the road, I guess I'll be bringing my shovel to the corner this weekend and getting rid of that damn snow bank!
*Disclaimer: We all have our own ideas and values of the things acceptable and allowed in our house and whats not, so please, if you allow these things in your homes, don't be offended, I have my own quirky reasons I don't like them or let my kids play with them.

The Westom's go to Disney World!
Thursday, January 6:
As I complete our packing for Disney World and am quite stressed that we are missing something, Mike stops me and asks me to make him a promise. "Let go of control for a week, let things happen as they happen and forget making a plan for everyday, it will be more fun for you and everyone else." Shaking with fear, I make the promise. I'm allowed to finish my packing and make sure everyone is prepared for anything that may happen, all while Mike says "Really we need to pack that?" over and over and over again. I really think we did quite well in the packing department, 4 suitcases (packed to capacity), 3 carry-on backpacks (packed to capacity), 2 carseats & 2 strollers. He thought I went a little overboard.
Saturday, January 8 (Travel Day):
At 7:00am I've already forgotten my promise made to my husband. I'm stressed to the max, the 2 strollers are overflowing and I still have a few things to stuff in backpacks - no room left! Thinking I will make security streamless, I had the kids change out of their tennis shoes and into their flip flops so we weren't tying up the line lacing shoes, etc. I completely forget that everyone has to remove sweatshirts, etc. what an ordeal! So much for being all planned out! I'm so glad that Southwest flies in and out of Humphry... could there be a better airport for children to be in? A play area right next to our gate, room for the kids to release energy without getting in the way of tons of passengers. Perfect! I am pretty sure I pissed off everyone that boarded after A28 that morning with my overflowing carry-on stuff.
Sunday, January 9 (Magic Kingdom):
We are going to Disney World today!!!! It's Florida, so I have Veronica wear capris and a tank-top and Max wear a polo and shorts. We park the car and take the tram to the ferry to cross the lake and stand behind TONS of people in brand new parkas and Ugg boots... All the while I'm looking at my summer-clad children and laughing! I live in the artic cold and don't own a pair of Ugg boots! Since my Sorels are a little past their prime, I'm considering getting a pair of Uggs once they hit the clearance racks this spring after seeing how cute they were on everyone in FLORIDA, but at the same time, I wonder how cute they will look with that lovely salt ring on them! Remember, promised to let go of control, so my mind was wondering on the craziest of things this whole time instead of where we are going to go first, second, third, fourth, you get the idea! So, back to our trip! On the ferry (I'll admit it was a little chilly with the wind over the water, bla bla bla), there were seagulls flying everywhere and my kids kept ducking saying the eagles were going to poop on them! Haha! We get off the ferry and our eyes are filled with magic! We are finally here!!!!
Monday, January 10 (free day):
This was possibly our most challenging day of the whole vacation. The forecast was for heavy rains in the afternoon so we decided not to waste a park pass. Instead we went to the awesome Orlando Premium Outlet Mall and Downtown Disney. I have to say I was quite disappointed by the reviews I'd read about 2 places. The Disney store at the outlet mall was not as great as everything I had read and the store at Downtown Disney that was supposed to be a great souvenir shop with reasonable prices was all a bunch for a dollar junk. For the very first time, Mike and I were embarrassed to have our children in public. While at the outlet mall we found a store with triple discounts on business wear. Mike and I were both in need of some new work clothes and found this the perfect opportunity to grab some at a great price. Unfortunately before we were done making our selections, our children had embarrassed us so much by their attitudes and behavior that we had to hurry up and get them out of the store. Really, what were we thinking, this was a vacation for them, how dare we do something, anything that week for ourselves. Luckily the mall was open till 11:00 that night and my parents were more than happy to spend a few minutes playing with our babies, so Mike and I went back to the mall and got our only few minutes of alone time of the week. We used our alone time to look at things we couldn't possibly afford and then settle for the things we could! On our "new looks" shopping trip, we saved $343.73! I was thrilled!!!
Tuesday, January 11 (Animal Kingdom & Epcot):
Our alarm clocks went off at just the right time. Max and Veronica woke us up at 6:30 to remind us we were going back to the parks! This time we planned for the day AND for after the sun went down! The Animal Kingdom is the COOLEST zoo ever! The kids were so excited to see so many animals so close! Veronica became thoroughly addicted to roller coasters after getting to ride Everest! One thing we learned about our daughter on this trip, when she is truly scarred, we won't be able to hear it. She was completely silent through the whole thing (both times)!
After our exciting day at Animal Kingdom our kids crashed at Epcot! We watched a beautiful display of fireworks over the lake! All I can say after that... WOW!!!
Wednesday, January 12 (Epcot):
Educational Fun! There were so many cool things to do with the kids at Epcot! The kids didn't even know they were learning anything!
Thursday, January 13 (Hollywood Studios):
Probably my kids' second favorite place! They would have waited in line all day for Playhouse Disney Live on Stage (only Veronica wouldn't admit it)! She took me aside and said, "Mom, please don't tell anyone, I really like Playhouse Disney, but I don't want any of my friends to know, they'll think I'm a baby. Just tell them I waited in line for Max." So the story is told to everyone that she saw all of the characters in Playhouse Disney so her brother didn't have to be scarred to see them. Her reward.... THE TOWER OF TERROR! I went on the ride with her first. During the middle of the ride, she asked me if it was over yet. When we finally stopped moving she was excited to get off the ride to find her Daddy so she could show him how cool it was! When they were on the ride, they sat next to 2 early 20s guys that screamed the whole time. After the ride, they asked Mike if Veronica was okay, because once again, she pulled the silent card!
Friday, January 14 (Magic Kingdom):
I think Magic Kingdom is my favorite place in the world! We got Veronica her roller coaster fix on Space Mountain and then spent the rest of the day seeing the things we missed the first day we were there. The only thing Mike had on his list to see for sure was "It's a Small World" well, we did it and the whole time we all looked around asking what was the designer of this ride on when they created it?! No kidding... the ride was creepy. I do wonder how Disney has upgraded so many rides since their first year and THIS was one of the rides that was a staple.
My favorite experience of this entire trip was the fireworks display at Magic Kingdom. It is probably the most beautiful thing I have ever witnessed. A story was told with a painted sky and music. It was truly magical! Here is just 3 minutes of the 25 minute show.
Saturday, January 15 (Going Home):
The trip home was mostly uneventful, well, except when I noticed after I had boarded the plane that I forgot to throw out my bottle of water that was in my purse and that security had also missed it... Hmmm... that flight home felt safe.
Upon arrival we claimed all of our checked luggage except our CARSEATS! 2 hours later we left the airport with airline loaners.
I think 7+ days of vacation was a little long for my little loves and my big love. Will we do a family vacation again --- ABSOLUTELY! Will we do another family vacation that lasts a full week --- DEFINITELY NOT! While we all love each other and love spending time together more than anything, being in each others pockets for that long was a little much!
I probably should have written this right away instead of a week later while the experience was still fresh in my mind, but trying to get back into our routine has taken an immense amount of time and quite frankly, I needed a little down time!

Here's to 2011 and our Happily Ever After
Looking back on all of my adult new years, this is the year I am most excited for! I know it sounds strange since all of "life's biggest moments" happened in years past, but I'm so excited to continue our new beginning! I've really been thinking about what my New Years Resolution should be and while I may be a few days overdue, I think that's okay. This year my New Years Resolution is not so much a resolution as a promise to continue working to bring my family closer together! After a couple of rocky years behind us, we started off fresh the summer of 2010 and I'm so excited to see where it takes us!
To start our year, we are visiting the magical land of Walt Disney World. We will be traveling with my parents & my sister! This will be our very first family vacation! I am so excited to share this experience with my kids and my husband! The last time I went to Disney I was a bratty, moody, hormonal 13 year old girl and I'm sure the entire Disney cast saw the whites of my eyes more times than they can count! As a 28 year old, I'm picturing myself glowing with stars in my eyes! I'm wishing I wouldn't have gotten rid of my Cinderella prom dress so that I can join my daughter in dressing up for this magical adventure! My son can hardly contain his excitement to meet Mickey Mouse and Handy Manny! He's also beside himself that he will get to join other pirates in saying "Argh! Maity!" Our suitcase are packed and we are counting down the hours until our plane touches down in Orlando! Exactly 48 hours from this minute!!! I wonder if the rest of my family is looking at the clock as often as I am?!
When we return from our magical adventure, we get to come home to our "Happily Ever After!" I wish the Disney classics would show what their Happily Ever After turned out to be like, I wonder if it is anything like ours? I love, respect and admire my husband more today than I did the day I married him. Together we made 2 of the most precious gifts on earth that give a whole new meaning to our lives. Everyday we get to find out something new about ourselves, eachother and our little angels! I can't wait to see what this year has in store for us!

That darn tooth cost us 23 bucks!
I guess my reaction to my little girl's first loose tooth rubbed off on her a bit. The other night while eating dinner she cut her tongue on her way too loose tooth. I knew it wasn't going to take much for that tooth to fall out. But she said, "Mom, I don't think I'm ready for it to come out."
Fast forward to later that night my husband, Mike, came home from work and made her a bet for $5 that she wouldn't take the tooth out by herself. She told him that just wasn't enough. He attempted a $10 bet and she renegotiated at $20! That's my girl - make every dollar count! Not thinking she would actually do it herself, Mike said it's a deal! Within minutes, that tooth was gone and we were out of cash! We had to scramble to find a few dollars for the "Tooth Fairy" to leave.
Yesterday morning, I decided to ask my kids what they thought the tooth fairy looked like and what they did with all of those teeth. Max said "They build a castle, Mom!" Veronica went a little more in depth on their appearance and what they do! Did you know these facts about the Tooth Fairy?:

- There are a whole bunch of them.
- Each fairy only goes to 1 house/night.
- They are very tiny (think Tinkerbell).
- There is a queen that takes care of the baby fairies until they are grown up to be full-blown Tooth Fairies
- They save their teeth to build their own houses.

Loose Tooth
After getting to bed at 1:15 this morning from a long-over-due girls night, 6:00 came WAY too early for me. I was completely unprepared for the day, not to mention a travel day where I need to pack 4 people to get out of town in a snow storm tonight. As I was getting my son, Max, dressed for the day while he was still asleep (and loving that he still depends on me to do this for him), my growing-up way too fast daughter, Veronica, comes bounding into Max's room, "MOM!!!! My first tooth is loose!" In that instant, Max woke up and didn't need me to help him get dressed and I started bawling.
I am trying to smile and listen to Veronica talk excitedly about how this is FINALLY happening to her. (She cried frequently last year [kindergarten] that everyone else had lost a tooth but her). All I could think about is where that liquid cement got put in the move so I could make that tooth stay in her mouth. Desperately trying to keep that tooth in her mouth, I told her that it wasn't good for it to fall out right away, so she shouldn't play with it, should be careful with what she eats, and when she brushed her teeth this morning, I told her not to brush that tooth so it didn't get any looser. I know I'm a horrible mom for doing this, but I NEED my babies to continue to depend on me, at least for a little longer.
